9 Secrets Santa Wishes You Knew!

There’s not a person on earth who doesn’t love holidays. In addition to days off from work and school it is a time filled with festivity, warmth and holiday spirit. With the approach of December, the magic bells begin to ring and there is a dash of red in every street.

What if Santa came and told you 9 Secrets…secrets and truth about the future? Something you could do today to make tomorrow amazing! That would be wonderful … right?

Holidays come with the spirit of giving and even though there are a few days between now and the actual holidays, our friends have started stocking up and purchasing gifts for their loved ones. What if Santa told you “Invest in your child’s future, invest in the RIGHT activities that will surely make your child shine!”

Here are some amazing secrets that Santa wished you knew: SECRET’S ABOUT STEM EDUCATION- The education for the future.

Here are 9 reasons why children need STEM education:

Prepares for the Future:

STEM allows children to get ready and qualified for high paying super cool jobs that are on the rise! Our children are taught 21st century skills such as innovation, collaboration, communication, and technology integration. The best jobs in the future would be in Science, Technology, Engineering and Medical. There are already incredible breakthroughs in the respective fields and will definitely be more with time as your children get into it.

Leadership:

You would want to inspire your little ones to become confident leaders. STEM is motivational and kids get to learn from their role models. If introduced at an early age, it allows them to imbibe leadership skills. The earlier they start, the sooner they will learn them and will have more time to polish the skills. With more and more advancements in STEM, global leadership is changing and as our children grow up, they can lead us in the fields.

Kid’s Favorite Way of Learning:

The best thing about STEM is the way it is taught to the students and children. Kids conduct experiments, build structures, and flex their curiosity and questioning muscles. Programs are not only uniquely designed to meet the intellectual needs of the respective ages of the students, but are also thoroughly studied to ensure that the children genuinely enjoy the learning process. And the more the student enjoys, the more they learn.

Exploration:

STEM allows children to explore and learn more about the world. Ranging from video game creation to deep-sea exploration to medicine to the vast field of engineering. STEM has helped us in real life and they can understand how it can help the human race in the long run.

Retention:

Holidays are great fun for the kids and after working hard during the year. They need some break to relax and unwind and play in the snow. But you can only play so much before you start getting bored. STEM classes should do the trick and since its fun to do, they don’t need to worry about things getting boring or studying again.

Socializing like Santa:

With STEM education, they will get to interact and socialize with like-minded children and let their curiosity flow. They will learn teamwork and team play and that will be beneficial in growing friendships and buddies.

Problem Solving:

Perhaps the most important skill the children can learn is problem solving. They will be presented with multiple challenges in their STEM related coursework. They will then cultivate skills of problem solving to overcome these obstacles and come out at the other end successful. Even if they do not end up working in a STEM related field, problem solving a skill that will help them no matter which field they are in professionally.

Critical Thinking:

As information begins to get incredibly easy to get, so does the risk of false information being circulated also increases. It is imperative for a person to cultivate a sense of judgment that can help them identify these false claims and uncover the real truth. Critical thinking is the objective analysis of facts to form an unbiasedrational, and skeptical judgment. It is also a very useful tool in STEM and something the previous skill relies on. STEM follows an organized process that leads to strong beliefs. Critical thinking teaches us to be analytic and ask questions. And, through these questions, we can form sound judgments that lead to innovative solutions.

Guarantees a successful future:

From the knowledge they gain from the STEM education, they will have what the real world needs. However, most of the children who are enrolled in the STEM program study further in the field and make careers in these fields. Science and Tech along with Engineering and Medical fields have always been the most innovative fields. Notwithstanding, there is always something new happening each day and there is always need of more qualified personnel to work in these fields. With STEM education, their future is secure as there will always be need of them in the present and the future. Even if the job doesn’t exist, in a few years when the child graduates, there will be a huge demand in that relevant job.

15 Preschool STEM And STEAM Activities for This Month

The capacity of kids preschool to grasp science, technical, engineering, and mathematics concepts has always been wanting. This is because the technical subjects involve complex ideologies that escape the capacity of the young minds when presented raw. However, these concepts can be presented in an age-friendly manner with amazing results. This is the aim of STEM activities, where pre-schoolers are introduced to learning the easy way, without them even knowing they are required to learn. This produces lifelong learners that are open to try new concepts and embrace technical ideas. Here is a list of 15 STEM activities pre-school kids can engage in safely and easily.

1. Absorption

Students learn this basic scientific term through various levels of school. Introducing the concept to pre-school kids enable them to relate the science terminology to activities with which they are familiar. This can be achieved through the use of a sponge and water placed in a container. The kid will place the sponge over the water and the sponge will take up the water thus making the container dry. This is a simple way of introducing the concept of absorption.

2. Flower dissection

Another practical idea that can be interesting to preschool kids is the dissection of flower. While they may not understand the term dissection, they can learn this scientific activity by following your directions as a part of a game. The kid will try out cutting flowers into parts severally until they get it right. Preferably, allow the kids to do this in the garden and enjoy the fresh air and natural feel.

3. Gravity

The force of gravity is an interesting finding that the pre-school kids can learn without much trouble. This is especially the case because they are playful, and will find throwing stuff into the air and watching it fall back interesting. You can try this using different stuffs, including balls, fruits, and pebbles.

4. Counting

Counting is one of the earliest skills that children acquire. It involves the recitation of the basic numbers, and the ability to identify the figures using objects. This can be achieved using blocks with numbers written on top of them.  Counting objects will also help the kids to understand and recognize the numbers. This will improve their mathematical confidence and skills.

5. Groups of Animals

Toys present domestic and wild animals in a way that attracts the attention of kids. You can be adventurers and give them a tour of the different animals using the toys. The toys may be stuffed animals or plastic toys. The children will manage to differentiate between the different animal types and identify their nature.

6. Heart Rate

The pre-school kids can also appreciate the biological skill of recognizing and counting the heartbeats. This will involve placing the hand of the young one on your heart to feel the beating of the heart. You can also take turns to feel each other’s heart beats to increase the fun.

7. Magnets

The magnets are physically viable, and the little children are likely to appreciate their actions. You can have the kids experiment with different objects to feel the attraction and repulsion powers and tell the difference. They will learn about the difference between magnetic and non-magnetic objects, and the power of a magnetic field.

8. Nuts and bolts

The kids can learn this stem activity by experimenting with different bolts and nuts. The idea is to close and open the items, and pair them as appropriate. This may take time, and it will keep you kid busy and interested for a long time.

9. Nature

Take the pre-school kids out to observe natural phenomenon and appreciate the marvel of natural things. The children will get to hear the different voices and relate them to the respective animals. They will also feel the texture of the animals by touching the fur and hide of the animals. Interacting with the plants and flowers is also a safe way of familiarizing your kid with scientific concepts. The nature walk will also help you and your kid bond and rejuvenate by breathing fresh air.

10. Observing

Kids learn a lot from observing things within their environment. You can make good use of this opportunity and allow learning to take place through observation. For instance, children can learn about STEM concepts in their environment. Observing the wind is a good experience that the kids can learn from without feeling the pressure of learning.

11. Wind

This natural phenomenon can be a wonderful learning activity for the young ones. It requires them to be outdoors, and to learn to appreciate the effect of the wind through observing such impact as swaying trees. Moreover, the children will learn to identify the feel of the wind on their faces.

12. Surface Tension

Surface tension allows objects to settle on the surface of water when it is undisturbed. Kids can observe you placing a needle on the water gently. They can then try to imitate your actions severally until they get it right. The excitement will be worthwhile, and the learning experience priceless.

13. Waves

Waves form a significant part of the physical sciences. These can be observed in the natural world through the observation of waves in the ocean. However, you can reproduce this effect using water ripples at home. Alternatively, you can introduce your kid to this science using strings.

14. Preschool level Structures

Once more, kids will learn about a lot of information from their toys. For instance, block building introduces the kids to different shapes that they can learn. This helps them develop their mathematical skills. The toys can also inform the kids about differences in structure through the varying shapes.

15. Temperature

Pre-school children can appreciate the differences in temperature from an early stage. They know when they need to put on their pullovers, and when the weather is too hot. The can identify hot and cold objects easily. This introduces the kids to physical science terminologies and concepts thus qualifying as a STEM activity.

This experiment guarantees to boost the sensory abilities of the participating skills, as it requires creativity and attention to detail. The simple experiment involves creating a base of oobleck, which is a mixture of starch and water to create varying consistencies as per the desires of the user. The oobleck is fascinating in that it can be used as a solid base, yet it melts into a liquid when squeezed. A collection of fake spiders are then attached to the prepared them. Ensure they stick to it and create an eerie experience

  1. Spooky Hand Sanitizer

This simple experiment will engage the kids and add to the fun of the Halloween. The sanitizers will be used normally, ensuring there is no wastage of resources. The sanitizer used in this experiment will be the normal one. However, the kids will be required to eliminate the branding papers from the surface of the sanitizer, leaving it clear. They will also need to choose the right colour to go with the theme of the party. The spooky part involves the addition of eerie structures such as monster eyes, skulls, and bones into the sanitizer bottle. This implies that the kids will have to see the scary substances every time they clean their hands.

  1. Ghost-like Styrofoam Structures

Get a little bit of engineering fun for your kids by making this imaginary structure. All you will need include the Styrofoam balls, toothpicks, and a black sharpie. Your kids will gain decision-making skills by choosing the suitable parameters that will help them create the most viable form. Relevance of Hands-on Science for Kids

Hands-on activities encourage kids to learn activity involving them in the process of science. Kids become invested in activities when they raise the questions and support design the experiment to answer them. Here are some other factors to do hands-on science:

Relevance of Hands-on Science for Kids
Relevance of Hands-on Science for Kids

Show kids that science is a process they use daily.

Engaging kids in the method of science teaches them that science is a way of thinking about the globe, a particular way of asking questions and looking for replies. Children learn that everyone can be a scientist. For example, reveal everyday examples of asking questions, making ideas, and drawing a conclusion.

Take benefits of kids interests

Involving kid’s sense, hands, even full bodies in learning to address their diverse learning styles: Some kids learn top when information is presented verbally, others physically, other visually, and so on.

Kids at the age of 10 are developing their social skills. Working in a little group provides them permission to discuss and interact while supporting them to develop teamwork expertise they will need in the workplace and during their lives.

The advantages of hands-on learning in science

Professionals trust that by involving students in full learning experience (i.e., learning by doing), their capability to think critically is significantly improved. It teaches them to trust more on proof, attracts them to think independently and decrease their dependence on authority.

Further, numerous studies indicate that it raises the student’s motivation to learn and improves their creativity, perception, and logic. As an outcome, they are not only capable of applying what they have learned inside the classroom in their everyday lives – they can also apply the full learning experience to various living conditions.

Anyway, this does not imply that we should do away with textbooks. They have already verified their value in providing basic detail and can serve excellent reference materials for students. Text-based instruction and hands-on learning can be successfully gathered, but it would be better if publishers would consider providing best hands-on activities and further resources to extra enrich their textbook programs.

How can teachers gain experience with hands-on techniques?

It cannot be ignored that while some teachers support the idea, there are also those who express their worry about their capability to teach using hands-on techniques due to their restricted science background.

Here are some advises to overcome their restrictions.

  • Participate in workshops, consider peer coaching and visit museums.
  • Participate in regional, state and national conferences to raise exposure to techniques, materials, and a wider community of peers.
  • School administrators should attract teachers to participate in some of the accessible programs and prepare classroom activities. They should also be provided with all the resources they want, and ample time to adjust the new teaching technique.
  • Begin using hands-on techniques inside the classroom. Teachers also learn top by doing so don’t be afraid to roll up your sleeves, dig in, and enjoy the experience.

Examples of hands-on science for kids

  • One of my students has 2 leopard geckos and a snake as family pets. His dad was amazing and brought these animals into classroom one day. Having the true things grabbed their focus like nothing else! They were capable of watching actual what the reptiles seemed like, how they walk etc. they heard to their buddy’s dad as he described tidbits about the pets. Even excellent, they were capable of occurring and softly touch the python. This visit made a large impression.
  • Kids love music, mainly when they get to make it. This simple science activity for children lets them not just make cool tunes; it supports them learn how different kinds of stuff make different sounds. By discovering the tonnes of plastic and glass, they will learn a bit about how different kinds of stuff feedback to outside forces.
  • Every area has a wealth of wildlife –including its own domestic birds. By learning about these species, your kids can promote understanding and admiration of their place of birth. While bird watching can be very easy, a bird watching journey will get your children thrill about the activity while including another measurement to the detail they get. Discovering domestic wildlife is an exciting and educational activity that 10 to 12 years old will love.

3 Learning Styles for Kids!(Must know for Every Parent)

People have different learning styles. Have you ever noticed that people tend to absorb and learn things differently?

I mean just take a look at your siblings, friends, parents, and classmates and you will see that we all have different preferences of assimilating and understanding the world. This is because we all have different learning styles.

This was true when we were a child and this is the case even as an adult. There are several learning styles. But it can be narrowed to few main ones.

If you want to take TEST your child’s learning style…Do it now here!

These are the three (3) main learning styles:

Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic.

For the longest time, teachers focused on teaching using one or two learning styles. It was mainly the style that they were comfortable in. However, that did not cater to all students. Therefore, some kids missed out on being taught in a way that they could easily understand.

You can imagine how being excluded feels like! In fact, some were even mistaken as dumb which was quite the contrary! If they were taught in their suitable learning style, they could master any art or skill.

Now a days, teachers are more aware about this fact. They are encouraged to teach in styles that cater to all students. I would say it sounds pretty fair right?

As a parent, if you understand and know your child’s learning style, you can help them learn more effectively.

However be careful not to put your child in a specific box because even though they have a dominant learning style, they will often dip into other learning styles in order to better understand the world they live in.

learning styles :wizkidsclub.com

Let’s look at these 3 dominant learning styles:

Visual Learners

Children who operate in this learning style tend to learn best through watching and observing. As the name suggests they are ‘visual’ learners and interpreters. For them to truly understand what they are learning, they need to be able to visualize, imagine, see and demonstrate their skills, ideas, and knowledge.

Characteristics of Visual Learners:

  • Like to SEE what they are learning
  • When given instructions they like to write them down as well as to see them being demonstrated and shown
  • Prefer to have paper and pens at their disposal
  • Notorious for doodling while they listen
  • Easily recall visual information
  • Like color-coding as well as reviewing tables, maps, and charts
  • Like to discuss what they are learning with others

With these learners, the best way to support them is to SHOW them how to do something versus telling them what to do. For them it’s essential they SEE what needs to be done.

Auditory Learners

Dominantly auditory children learn with their EARS. Therefore instead of reading (visually) instructions they prefer LISTENING to them and sometimes recite information out loud so that they can HEAR it. Sometimes they like to study with background music, or it could be too distracting for them and they just want silence.

Characteristics of Auditory Learners:

  • Don’t like working alone and much rather enjoy discussion groups
  • When learning something novel they tend to talk to themselves(they want to hear)
  • Need oral explanations
  • Like using word associations
  • Talking out loud helps them to remember and recall information
  • Sometimes may struggle with written instructions
  • Sometimes they sing the information, in order to remember it

Their listening abilities are way more advanced than their visual skills, even though at times it may look like they are not paying attention when you talk to them.

Kinesthetic learners AKA Tactile learners

These are your active learners who like to learn by TOUCHING, DOING and by being active. They are not big fans of sitting still and focusing. They assimilate information better by doing hands-on activities and by writing things down.

Characteristics of Kinesthetic Learners:

  • They like underlining and highlighting
  • Really like hands-on activities, DIYs, playing games and building models to name a few activities
  • Like to actively participate in the learning process
  • Tend to talk with their hands
  • When talking and listening, they tend to move up and down and like taking regular breaks
  • Like to learn by touching so that they can ‘feel’ what they are learning
  • Track words on a page with their fingers and like reading aloud
  • In order to remember information they like to write things several times

Due to the fact that kinesthetic aka tactile learners don’t really fall in the custom auditory and visual learning styles, they can sometimes be mischaracterised as trouble makers or having ADHD, which might not be the case.

Take the time to find out your child’s dominant learning style

As parents, it is important to try and identify your child’s primary learning style so that you can reduce the level of frustration from both parties and strengthen your parent-child relationship. In this way, you can better understand, support your precious one and communicate to them in a way that you know will yield higher chances of understanding and learning. Equally don’t be afraid to inform their teacher, this allows them to be more aware of your child’s learning needs and required support. As mentioned before, your children will dip into the other learning styles, however, they will have a dominant one and that’s your job to find out!

If you want to create awareness and help other parents understand more about their child’s learning style. Pls SHARE this article and save any child from being misunderstood.
